The History Of Reflexology

Modern reflexology is based on an ancient form of therapy. There is evidence of some form of foot and hand therapy being practised in China as long ago as 2330 B.C. and also at the same time in Egypt, as depicted in the tomb of Ankmahor. The North American tribes of Indians are known to have practised a form of foot therapy for hundreds of years.

There is some confusion about the true origin of this powerful therapy, sufficient to say that it has stood the test of time and has helped thousands of people to better health.

The dictionary definition of a “Reflex” is “an involuntary or instinctive movement in response to a stimulus” or in the sense of reflection or mirror image.

The reflexes on our feet and hands act as mirror images of the body.

Reflexology can benefit people of all ages and, depending on the length of time a condition has been present, can improve or eliminate many ailments during a course of four to six weekly treatments.

PHILOSOPHY
Foot reflexology

A reflexologist will begin a foot reflexology treatment by undertaking a thorough health, diet and lifestyle consultation. Following this, they will examine your feet and may ask further questions. The treatment will then begin with some general relaxation techniques, followed by a precise thumb and finger walking technique aimed at applying pressure to every reflex area on the top and bottom of the foot.

Table reflexology

There are lots of different Reflexology techniques around and each represent different standards and levels of experience. In the UK, there are currently no laws or regulations, therefore anyone can set up a business and call themselves a “Reflexologist”. Thankfully, an organisation has been set up called The Reflexology Forum, which is working towards self-regulation of Reflexologists and creating National Occupational Standards for our industry.

Traditional Tibetan Foot soak therapy was passed from generation to generations for many years. It is a natural therapy and has the reputation of “green therapy.” People started using foot soak therapy to treat disease for about three thousand (3000) years ago, in the Yin-Shang period.
